This antique zoological engraving depicts a group of exotic animals observed in the Dutch East Indies, including the Cuscus, Lipanno, Kemphaan (a bird species), Mongoose, and both male and female Chameleons. Set within a stylized tropical landscape with palm trees and rocky cliffs, the animals are rendered in lively postures and labeled with alphabetical markers. The scene was published in Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (Old and New East Indies), a monumental illustrated work by Dutch naturalist and VOC minister François Valentijn, which combined travel narrative, natural history, and ethnographic observation from the Dutch colonial territories in Asia.

François Valentijn was a Dutch theologian, historian, and naturalist who lived for many years in the East Indies. His five-volume work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (1724–1726) is one of the most comprehensive sources on the geography, flora, fauna, and cultures of Southeast Asia during the early 18th century. The engravings included in the work are highly valued for their early representations of native wildlife and colonial landscapes.
