200 Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) – 5.7.59 VII – Ink Drawing from the Toros y Toreros Series (1959)

This striking monochrome work by Pablo Picasso, dated 5.7.59 VII, forms part of his celebrated Toros y Toreros series, created during the summer of 1959. Executed in expressive ink wash, the composition captures three silhouetted matador figures—one on horseback—set against the suggestive backdrop of a bullring. With minimal brushstrokes and dramatic contrast, Picasso evokes the theatrical atmosphere of the corrida, reducing complex forms to pure gesture and rhythm.
The number and date at the bottom (5.7.59 VII) mark this as the seventh drawing from July 5th, 1959—part of the intensely productive period when Picasso revisited the bullfight theme, a lifelong obsession symbolic of ritual, masculinity, and death. This piece was later included in the 1961 publication Toros y Toreros, printed by Mourlot and published by Éditions Cercle d’Art in Paris.
Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, used this series to merge drawing with performance, blending the immediacy of ink with the energy of the Spanish arena.
