24 Christoph Weigel – Map of the Duchies of Holstein, Dithmarschen, Stormarn, and Wagria – Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving – 1718

This detailed and beautifully hand-colored map depicts the northern German duchies of Holstein, Dithmarschen, Stormarn, and Wagria, including the prominent cities of Lübeck, Kiel, Hamburg, and Schleswig. The map was engraved by Christoph Weigel and printed in Nuremberg in 1718 by Johann Ernst Adelbulner. It outlines rivers, towns, borders, and regional divisions, offering a comprehensive view of Schleswig-Holstein and its neighboring territories in the early 18th century.
Decorative flourishes include an ornate title cartouche and finely executed topographical elements, characteristic of Weigel’s work. The map was published as part of Bequemer Schul- und Reisen-Atlas (also known as Atlas scholasticus et itinerarius), produced in collaboration with historian Johann David Köhler. This atlas was widely used in academic and travel contexts across German-speaking Europe.
Christoph Weigel (1654–1725), also known as “Weigel the Elder,” was a prolific German engraver and map publisher based in Nuremberg. His atlases are celebrated for their combination of scientific clarity and decorative artistry, making them enduringly valuable to collectors and historians alike.
