This finely executed portrait depicts a woman from Santa Christina (now Tahuata, part of the Marquesas Islands), based on a drawing made from life by William Hodges during Captain James Cook’s second voyage (1772–1775). The engraving was made by J. Hall and published in 1777 by W. Strahan and T. Cadell in London, as part of the official account of the expedition. The woman is shown draped in cloth, adorned with simple jewelry, her expression composed and dignified. The portrait highlights both the individuality of the subject and the ethnographic interest of Enlightenment-era scientific voyages.

William Hodges was the official artist on Cook’s second voyage and one of the first European painters to document the people and landscapes of the South Pacific. His works offer some of the earliest and most influential visual representations of Polynesian cultures. These engravings, made from his on-site sketches, were instrumental in shaping European understanding of the peoples encountered during the expedition.
