141 Jacques de Sève (active 1740–1788) – Le Roquet, Grandson du Lézard – Original Copperplate Engraving – 18th Century

This engraving depicts Le Roquet, described as a “grandson of the lizard,” shown walking along an architectural ledge in a classical landscape. The figure of the reptile is rendered with fine detail in the limbs, scales, and expressive posture, while the background includes Roman-style ruins and ornamental vegetation, characteristic of de Sève’s theatrical compositions. The plate, marked Tom. I, Pl. XXVII, pag. 397, was published in Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle and reflects the period’s ambition to merge zoological study with artistic elegance.
Jacques de Sève was a principal illustrator for Buffon’s natural history series. His engravings are known for their graceful integration of scientific observation and decorative landscape, helping to define the visual culture of natural science in 18th-century France.
