211 François Valentijn (1666–1727) – Tropical Plants and Trees of the East Indies – Botanical Plate from "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën" – Copperplate Engraving (1724)

This botanical engraving, printed in 1724, originates from François Valentijn’s encyclopedic work Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën, published in Dordrecht and Amsterdam. The plate showcases sixteen finely detailed studies of tropical plants and trees native to Southeast Asia and the Indonesian archipelago, each framed and numbered. Rendered with scientific clarity, the illustrations reflect the growing European interest in exotic flora during the early 18th century.
Valentijn’s work documents both the economic value and natural diversity of plants encountered in VOC territories. This particular sheet exemplifies the systematic approach to botanical classification and field observation practiced by early colonial naturalists.
François Valentijn (1666–1727) was a Dutch minister, naturalist, and historian who served in the Dutch East Indies with the VOC. His Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën compiled natural history, ethnography, and political geography, and included visual contributions from VOC artists, local informants, and earlier scientific correspondents such as Georg Eberhard Rumphius.
