This hand-colored map presents the intricate political geography of south-western Germany, encompassing regions such as Swabia (Suevia), Alsace, and parts of Switzerland. It is richly detailed with principal cities, bishoprics, rivers, and territorial boundaries. A decorative title cartouche appears in the upper left corner, accompanied by allegorical imagery and regional references. The map was published as part of Weigel’s influential Bequemer Schul- und Reisen-Atlas, also known under the Latin title Atlas Scholasticus et Itinerarius.

Johann Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) was a renowned German engraver, publisher, and bookseller based in Nuremberg. His work is noted for its clarity and decorative appeal, often created in collaboration with the historian Johann David Köhler. Together, they produced some of the most educational and accessible cartographic works of the early 18th century. Weigel’s atlases combined scientific accuracy with artistic elegance, making them essential tools for both scholars and travelers of the time.
