This emblematic city view titled Montaigne de Cas with the Latin motto Nimia Prudentia Raro Felix ("Excessive prudence is rarely fortunate") is part of Daniel Meisner’s celebrated series Thesaurus Philo-Politicus, published around 1630. The composition features a panoramic landscape with a fortified city nestled in the valley, while a couple in the foreground engages in a symbolic exchange of wisdom and moderation. The imagery is accompanied by Latin and German couplets that reflect on the virtues and limits of excessive caution.

Daniel Meisner (1585–1625) was a German-Bohemian poet and engraver renowned for his unique blend of emblematic imagery and topographical detail. His Thesaurus Philo-Politicus series offered a moral and political interpretation of European cities, blending early modern ideology with allegorical and didactic visuals. Often working with Eberhard Kieser, Meisner’s emblematic prints gained popularity across 17th-century Europe.
