178 Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) – Hen and Rooster – Copperplate Engraving (ca. 1650)

This engraving showcases a domestic hen and rooster, rendered with confident linework and balanced composition. Each bird is framed in its own panel, highlighting posture, feather texture, and typology, as was typical of early zoological studies.
Frederick de Wit (1629–1706) was a prominent Dutch cartographer, engraver, and printmaker based in Amsterdam. He was best known for his maps and atlases, but also produced finely executed natural history plates. His workshop became one of the most important centers of printed cartographic and scientific material in the Dutch Golden Age.
