199 Hieronymus Bock (1498–1554) – Set of Three Botanical Woodcut Leaves – Armeniaca, Sorbus, Pistacia – Woodcuts from Kreutterbuch (1546)
This set of three early botanical leaves comes from the second illustrated edition of Hieronymus Bock’s seminal herbal “Kreutterbuch”, printed in Strasbourg in 1546. Each page features detailed woodcut illustrations of fruit-bearing plants and medicinal species, including Armeniaca (apricot), Sorbus (rowan and service tree), and Pistacia (pistachio), along with accompanying descriptive text in Fraktur typeface. The recto sides are adorned with fine woodcuts, while the versos include plant classifications, effects, and pharmacological applications, reflecting Bock’s systematic approach and early scientific methodology.
Hieronymus Bock (1498–1554) was a pioneering German botanist, physician, and Lutheran minister. One of the “Fathers of Botany,” Bock broke with traditional reliance on ancient texts and emphasized first-hand observation and local flora. His “Kreutterbuch” was among the earliest works to describe plants by their natural characteristics and geographical occurrence rather than just by medical uses or classical tradition.
