5047 Nicolas Sanson – Map of South America / Amerique Meridionale – Copperplate Engraving (c.1743)

This finely engraved 18th-century map titled Amerique Meridionale depicts the continent of South America with early colonial divisions and geographical knowledge. The map includes major regions such as Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, and Patagonia (Magel.), along with coastal features, river systems, and mountain ranges sketched with clarity and ornamentation. The elegant title cartouche notes its creation by Nicolas Sanson, Geographer to the King.
This map was included in Introduction à l’Histoire Générale et Politique de l’Univers, a historical and geographical atlas published in Amsterdam in 1743 by Zacharie Chatelain and attributed to cartographic plates originally by Sanson. It reflects Enlightenment-era efforts to disseminate geographic knowledge across Europe using compact but authoritative maps.
