5020 Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598) – Map of Poitou – Copperplate Engraving (1595)

This original 16th-century copperplate map titled Poictou was engraved by Abraham Ortelius and published in 1595 as part of his landmark atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, considered the first modern atlas. The map is titled in Latin: Pictonum Vicinarumque Regionum Fidissima Descriptio, and depicts the historical French province of Poitou, including surrounding areas such as Anjou, Touraine, Limousin, and Saintonge.
The map is richly detailed, featuring cities, rivers, coastal islands, and topographical elements, with fine early modern script and a decorative cartouche in the upper right. Ortelius credited the map’s original source to Pierre Regnault (Petrus Regnault), a local cartographer. The engraving is framed with a decorative border and includes a scale bar at the bottom.
Ortelius was one of the most important figures of early cartography, and his atlases were widely distributed across Renaissance Europe. This map combines aesthetic elegance with geographic and historical significance.
