208 James Sowerby (1757–1822) – Set of 8 Botanical Studies – Clubmoss & Scarlet Lichen – Hand-Coloured Engravings (1790–1814)

This original set of eight hand-coloured engravings comes from English Botany or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, with their Essential Characters, Synonyms and Places of Growth, published in London by J. Davis between 1790 and 1814. This first edition represents one of the most ambitious and influential botanical projects of its time. The selected prints feature species such as Curved-leaved Fork-moss (Dicranum cerviculatum), Socket Lichen (Lichen faccatus), Grapevine Hypnum Moss (Hypnum viticulofum), Marsh Clubmoss (Lycopodium inundatum), Alpine Clubmoss (Lycopodium alpinum), Clubmoss (Lycopodium clavatum), Scarlet Lichen (Lichen coccineus), and Water Stonewort (Sison inundatum).
James Sowerby was a pioneering English naturalist and botanical illustrator whose precise and elegant plates advanced the study of British flora and made it widely accessible. His engravings are noted for their scientific fidelity and distinctive hand-colouring.
