206 James Sowerby (1757–1822) – Set of 8 Botanical Studies – Water Lobelia & Sand Canary Grass – Hand-Coloured Engravings (1790–1814)

This elegant set of eight original hand-coloured engravings is taken from English Botany or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, with their Essential Characters, Synonyms and Places of Growth, published in London by J. Davis between 1790 and 1814. This foundational botanical work is renowned for its scientific accuracy and artistic refinement. The set features plants such as Sand Canary Grass (Phalaris arenaria), Darnel Wheat (Triticum loliaceum), Fine-leaved Sandwort (Arenaria tenuifolia), Bottle-shaped Moss (Splachnum ampullaceum), Water Lobelia (Lobelia dortmanna), Widgeon Grass (Ruppia maritima), Common Bulrush (Scirpus palustris), and Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum).
James Sowerby, one of the most important botanical illustrators of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, produced thousands of plates that brought clarity and visual richness to British plant taxonomy. His meticulous engravings, combined with delicate hand-colouring, remain treasured by botanists and collectors.
