198 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Campanula urticaefolia Varieties – Hand-Coloured Engraving (18th Century)

This elegant folio engraving presents three varieties of Campanula urticaefolia, or nettle-leaved bellflower. The illustration includes a tall blue-flowering stem (flore caeruleo reflexo), a slender white-flowered form (minor flore albo), and a leaf variation labeled foliis monstruosis. Each specimen is rendered with botanical accuracy and vibrant hand-colouring, highlighting the differences in leaf shape, flower colour, and stem structure. The plate is numbered 293 and was issued as part of Phytanthoza Iconographia, a foundational botanical work of the 18th century published in Regensburg under the direction of Weinmann, with key contributions by the young Georg Dionysius Ehret.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical publisher whose Phytanthoza Iconographia marked a breakthrough in botanical illustration through the use of mezzotint and hand-colouring. Many plates were drawn or influenced by Georg Dionysius Ehret, who would go on to revolutionize botanical art with his refined and lifelike compositions. Together, their work laid the foundation for modern botanical representation.
