196 Johann Wilhelm Weinmann - Dracunculus Species – Hand-Coloured Copper Engraving

This hand-coloured botanical engraving features two dramatic varieties of Dracunculus (commonly known as dragon arum): Dracunculus major serpentina with its broad leaves and dense yellow flower spike, and Dracunculus polyphyllus caule maculato, distinguished by its mottled stem and deep crimson spathe encasing a central inflorescence. The root structure is meticulously rendered, reflecting the scientific attention to botanical morphology characteristic of Phytanthoza Iconographia, where this plate (No. 472) was published. The strong colour contrast and exotic form of the plants make this one of the more visually arresting compositions in the series.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical publisher whose Phytanthoza Iconographia marked a breakthrough in botanical illustration through the use of mezzotint and hand-colouring. Many plates were drawn or influenced by Georg Dionysius Ehret, who would go on to revolutionize botanical art with his refined and lifelike compositions. Together, their work laid the foundation for modern botanical representation.
