232 After Leandro Bassano – Antique Pencil Drawing – Christ Crowned with Thorns

This evocative 19th-century pencil drawing represents Christ Crowned with Thorns, executed after a composition by Leandro Bassano (1557–1622), a member of the renowned Venetian Bassano family of painters. The scene is rich in emotional drama, capturing the moment Christ is mocked and crowned by Roman soldiers. His bowed head and silent suffering form the poignant center of a tightly staged group, rendered with expressive shading and focused light effects reminiscent of Bassano’s chiaroscuro technique.
While based on a known engraving by I. Bizzarro titled G. C. Coronato di Spine, this version transforms the printed intensity into soft graphite, preserving the complex tonal transitions and emotional charge. Likely intended as a devotional study or collector’s piece, the drawing comes from the collection of Carl Erik Schlyter (1899–1970), a noted Swedish consul and art patron.
