34 Frederik de Wit – Map of Bavaria / Circulus Bavaricus – Engraving (c.1680)

This engraved map titled Circulus Bavaricus by Frederik de Wit presents the territorial composition of the Bavarian Circle in the Holy Roman Empire. Oriented to the south (map shown inverted), it depicts in fine detail the political geography of Bavaria and surrounding regions including the Palatinate, Franconia, Swabia, and parts of Austria and Bohemia.
In the upper right corner (when viewed correctly), the title cartouche is elegantly draped and inscribed in Latin. In the lower left is a richly decorated emblematic cartouche with coats of arms and allegorical figures representing the ruling houses. De Wit’s dense cartographic style includes an abundance of towns, rivers, and natural features rendered with remarkable precision. This black-and-white example preserves the clarity of the original engraving without later color enhancement.
