37 Christoph Weigel – Map of Switzerland / Helvetiae – Hand-Coloured Engraving (c.1720s)

This elegant early 18th-century map of Switzerland (Helvetiae) was engraved and published by Christoph Weigel in Nuremberg. The map displays the Swiss cantons in distinct original hand colouring, carefully delineating political boundaries and topographical details. The title cartouche in the upper left is decorated with heraldic and allegorical motifs, while a small inset vignette in the lower left depicts a mountainous landscape, emblematic of the Alpine terrain.
Weigel’s maps are celebrated for their precision and decorative appeal, and this example is no exception, combining geographical accuracy with a strong visual aesthetic representative of German cartography during the Baroque period.
