4887 Jacques de Sève – Le Loup – Copperplate Engraving from Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle (18th Century)

This original 18th-century copperplate engraving titled Le Loup (The Wolf) was drawn by Jacques de Sève for Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon’s celebrated Histoire Naturelle. It presents the European grey wolf in a naturalistic landscape with distant hills and detailed foreground flora, emphasizing the animal’s anatomical accuracy and natural majesty.
Jacques de Sève (active 1740s–1780s) served as one of Buffon’s chief illustrators, known for pairing zoological precision with elegant and scenic settings in his compositions. These engravings formed part of one of the most influential natural history encyclopedias of the Enlightenment.
