This striking botanical mezzotint depicts Haemanthus africanus, also labelled Narcissus Indicus serpentarius, with its bulbous base, thick twin leaves, and deep crimson inflorescences rendered in vibrant hand-applied colour. The plate displays multiple floral and fruiting stages, including dissected flower heads and root structures. Numbered “No. 96” in the upper right corner, the image is engraved in the elaborate style typical of Johann Wilhelm Weinmann’s Phytanthoza Iconographia, and originates from the Dutch edition published in Amsterdam by Zacharias Romberg.

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical publisher whose Phytanthoza Iconographia remains one of the most influential botanical works of the 18th century. It was among the first to combine mezzotint engraving with colour printing on such an ambitious scale, offering over 1,000 illustrations. His work merged scientific taxonomy with Baroque aesthetic flourish and helped lay the groundwork for later botanical illustration.
