24 Ambroise Tardieu (1788–1841) – Map of the Battle of Feldkirch – Engraved Military Map (early 19th century)

This engraved military map by Ambroise Tardieu depicts the topography and strategic positions surrounding the fortified town of Feldkirch in western Austria, near the Swiss border. Titled Plan des positions de la Ville de Feldkirch, the map shows detailed terrain features—mountains, rivers, roads, and wooded areas—relevant to the military campaign of the French Revolutionary Wars. The layout is schematic, intended for analytical reference by officers and historians. The notation “Campagne du Rhin 7.e” at upper right indicates its inclusion in a larger set of military campaign maps.
Ambroise Tardieu was a noted French engraver, cartographer, and publisher active in the early 19th century. Renowned for his precision and clarity, he produced numerous maps for atlases, scientific works, and military collections.
