This elaborate architectural engraving by Giacomo Lauro depicts the Naumachia Domitiani, a monumental naval arena built under Emperor Domitian for staging mock sea battles in ancient Rome. The elliptical structure is shown flooded and filled with combat ships engaged in a staged confrontation. The composition features detailed representations of Roman galleys, arched spectator galleries, sculptural pediments, and an elaborate imperial podium. A Latin inscription below provides contextual information, and the engraving is numbered “36” in Lauro’s celebrated series.

Giacomo Lauro was a Roman engraver and antiquarian whose series Antiquae Urbis Splendor aimed to visually reconstruct the grandeur of ancient Rome through idealised architectural engravings. While based on classical sources, Lauro’s reconstructions were often imaginative, combining historical elements with artistic invention. His work played a central role in early modern visualisations of antiquity and remains a key reference in the history of classical reception.
