This antique lithograph presents a romanticised scientific rendering of Cirro-Stratus cloud formations, shown drifting in broad horizontal layers over an imagined mountainous landscape. The scene combines meteorological observation with picturesque composition: shepherds guide goats along a cliffside path while classical ruins rise in the foreground, blending natural science with 19th-century aesthetics. The image is plate No. 100 from Charles Blunt’s rare series The Beauty of the Heavens, one of the earliest works to popularise atmospheric and astronomical phenomena through coloured illustration.

Charles Blunt was a British educator, writer, and publisher active during the first half of the 19th century. Known for his works that aimed to make science accessible and visually engaging, Blunt combined observational accuracy with artistic flair. His atmospheric plates are now rare and valued for their role in the early visual culture of meteorology.
