23 Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697–1782) – Map of the Western Roman Empire – Hand-Coloured Engraved Map (c.1760)

This finely engraved map titled Orbis Romani Pars Occidentalis represents the western provinces of the Roman Empire, spanning Britannia, Gallia, Hispania, Italia, and parts of North Africa. Drawn entirely in Latin, the map reflects the territorial extent and provincial organization of the Roman West during the height of imperial administration. Key regions such as Gallia Narbonensis, Lusitania, Italia Suburbicaria, and Mauretania Tingitana are clearly delineated, along with ancient cities, rivers, and mountain ranges. The restrained hand-colouring of borders and grid structure reflects the Enlightenment’s emphasis on clarity and classical scholarship.
Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697–1782) was one of the leading French cartographers of the 18th century. Known for his erudite historical maps, he combined classical sources with rigorous geographical methodology. Appointed Geographer to the King of France, d’Anville’s work laid the foundation for modern historical cartography and remained influential across Europe well into the 19th century.
