27 Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726) – Map of France – Hand-Coloured Engraved Map (c.1780)
This detailed map of France, titled Carte de France, presents the kingdom’s provincial divisions, principal towns, rivers, and geographic features with scientific accuracy and visual refinement. Originally composed by Guillaume Delisle based on astronomical measurements and royal surveys, the map exemplifies Enlightenment cartographic principles. The current edition was published by Jean-Claude Dezauche after 1780, following his acquisition of Delisle’s and Buache’s engraving plates. It includes decorative cartouches, a scale bar, and political boundary colouring consistent with 18th-century French academic mapping traditions.
Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726) was a renowned French geographer and member of the Académie Royale des Sciences. Celebrated for bringing scientific precision to mapmaking, he was among the first to systematically apply astronomical data to geographic representation, establishing new standards of accuracy in early modern cartography.
Jean-Claude Dezauche (1745–1824), a Paris-based map dealer, engraver, and publisher, succeeded to the cartographic legacy of Delisle and Philippe Buache in 1780. He became one of the most prominent commercial map publishers of his time, known for updating and reissuing the great scientific maps of the early 18th century with vibrant outline colouring and fresh engravings.
