This beautifully rendered chromolithograph of the Tawny Owl (Strix Aluco), labeled in Swedish as "Kattuggla," is attributed to the works of Magnus von Wright, a pioneering Finnish ornithological illustrator. Von Wright, known for his precision and artistic sensitivity, captured the rich textures and lifelike features of the Tawny Owl perched gracefully on a branch. His expertise in both taxidermy and natural history illustration contributed to his significant influence in Finnish scientific art, and he remains celebrated for his illustrations in ornithological publications. First published in 1920, this chromolithograph showcases the vibrant coloring and intricate feather details characteristic of von Wright's skill. His contributions to Finnish ornithology, including the first handbook on Finnish birds, solidified his reputation as one of the most important zoological illustrators of his time.

Magnus von Wright (1805–1868) was the first taxidermist working with the vertebrate collections of Helsinki University. Starting out as a taxidermist in the 1820s, he stuffed birds for Societas pro Flora et Fauna Fennica, the oldest scientific society in Finland, and in 1845, became the taxidermist at the university's zoological museum. Von Wright made several study journeys to Stockholm and St. Petersburg, and even wrote a short manual on how to mount birds. Though a skilful taxidermist, his reputation, like that of his two brothers, Wilhelm and Ferdinand, rests on his skill as a zoological illustrator. In 1859 he published the first handbook on Finnish birds.
