This chromolithograph illustrates the astronomical phenomenon known as the Transit of Venus, where the planet Venus passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, appearing as a small black disc moving across the solar face. The diagram traces four key positions of Venus during its passage, aligned precisely across the Sun’s diameter. The solar corona is stylized in a radial pattern, and the entire composition is both scientific and artistic in its clarity. This educational print was part of Charles Blunt’s effort to visualize complex astronomical events for public and scholastic audiences.

Charles Blunt (1803–1878) was an esteemed British astronomer and lecturer known for his work in making astronomy accessible to the public. His series The Beauty of the Heavens was designed to introduce viewers to the wonders of the universe through beautifully illustrated and scientifically accurate celestial maps.
