This astronomical plate depicts the eclipse of Jupiter’s Galilean moons as they pass into the planet’s shadow. The diagram presents Jupiter at center with its major satellites in orbit, three of which align with the planet’s shadow cone, visually explaining the occurrence of eclipse events as seen from Earth. The Sun is illustrated at upper right, indicating the source of illumination, while the Earth appears at lower right as the point of observation. Such visualizations were critical in understanding orbital mechanics and predicting celestial events.

Charles Blunt (1803–1878) was an esteemed British astronomer and lecturer known for his work in making astronomy accessible to the public. His series The Beauty of the Heavens was designed to introduce viewers to the wonders of the universe through beautifully illustrated and scientifically accurate celestial maps.
