This emblem from Kunst voor Kracht features a river god or water spirit seated beside a stream, pouring water from an urn, while in the background a waterfall descends from a fortified mountain. The Latin motto “Tango, non frangor ab undis” (“I am touched but not broken by the waves”) conveys resilience and constancy amidst emotional or worldly turbulence. The Dutch verses below reinforce the message of calm endurance: like a steady stream, one should remain composed regardless of life’s outward rush. The godlike figure, rooted in place and surrounded by reeds, embodies this moral strength through stillness.

Jacob Cats consistently used allegorical nature figures to teach Stoic and Christian virtues. This plate blends classical iconography with Dutch moral instruction. Adriaen van de Venne captures the symbolic force of serenity and restraint, while Jan Swelinck’s engraving gives the figure sculptural presence and visual clarity.
