4641 Carl Gustav Jablonsky (1756–1787) – Set of 2 Plates of Dermocybe Mushrooms – Copperplate Engravings (Late 18th Century)
This two-plate set presents finely detailed illustrations of mushroom species within the genera Inoloma and Dermocybe, subgroups of the family Cortinariaceae. Though Jablonsky is primarily celebrated for his work on insects, these engravings reflect the same Enlightenment spirit of classification, precision, and artistic elegance applied to fungi. The publication was continued after Jablonsky’s death by Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst, reinforcing his lasting legacy in natural science.
Carl Gustav Jablonsky (1756–1787) was a Prussian naturalist and illustrator based in Berlin, who served as private secretary to Queen Elisabeth Christine of Prussia. Despite his short life, he helped pioneer scientific illustration rooted in Linnaean taxonomy.
