4639 Carl Gustav Jablonsky (1756–1787) – Set of 2 Plates of Phlegmacium Mushrooms – Hand-Colored Copperplate Engravings (Late 18th Century)

This set comprises two hand-colored copperplate engravings illustrating diverse species of the fungal genus Phlegmacium, part of the Cortinariaceae family. Each plate presents multiple specimens rendered with taxonomic clarity and labeled in Latin, including species such as claricolor, tritaphrum, and virium. The engravings combine botanical accuracy with visual delicacy, aiding early mycological classification efforts.
Though better known for his entomological work, Carl Gustav Jablonsky's contributions to natural history illustration extended to fungi and other groups, often in collaboration with J.F.W. Herbst, who continued publishing his work after Jablonsky’s untimely death.
Carl Gustav Jablonsky (1756–1787) was a Prussian naturalist and illustrator based in Berlin. He served as private secretary to Queen Elisabeth Christine and was among the first to apply Linnaean classification rigorously in entomology and natural sciences. His works are foundational in the history of scientific illustration.
