4637 Pieter van der Aa (1659–1733) – Journey of the Children of Israel from Egypt to the Land – Copperplate Engraving (1729)

This richly detailed copperplate engraving by Pieter van der Aa illustrates the forty-year biblical journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the Promised Land of Canaan, as recounted in the Book of Numbers (Num. XXXIII). The map presents a panoramic bird’s-eye view of the Sinai Peninsula, the Red Sea, the Dead Sea, and surrounding regions, with encampments and key locations marked along the Israelites’ route. A large decorative cartouche in the foreground, inscribed in Dutch, contextualizes the journey as a divine fulfillment of God’s promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Pieter van der Aa (1659–1733) was a Dutch cartographer, publisher, and bookseller based in Leiden. Renowned for his prolific output of maps and atlases, he specialized in reissuing earlier works with elaborate embellishments and was instrumental in shaping the visual culture of geography and sacred history in the early Enlightenment.
