4631 Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781–1835) – Coriolanus is Disarmed by Veturia / Veturia Conoscendo l’Impero che Essa Ava Sempre Avuto sul Suo Figlio Coriolano lo Disarma – Etching (1818)

This powerful etching by Bartolomeo Pinelli illustrates the legendary moment when Gaius Marcius Coriolanus, a Roman general turned enemy of Rome, is disarmed by the moral authority of his mother, Veturia. The scene captures the emotional climax of the tale: Veturia, accompanied by mourning Roman women and children on the left, confronts her son before the gates of Rome. On the right, Coriolanus’s army stands poised, awaiting his command. Overcome by his mother’s plea and the sight of his family, Coriolanus relents, sparing the city from destruction.
Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781–1835) was an Italian illustrator and engraver known for his vivid depictions of Roman life, mythology, and history. His Istoria Romana series, published in Rome in 1818, brought ancient narratives to life with expressive linework and dramatic composition, making classical themes accessible to a 19th-century audience.
