This original double-page lithograph by Jean-Paul Riopelle was created in 1974 as part of a limited edition series published in Derrière Le Miroir. The composition features a dynamic interplay of gestural black lines, bold red marks, and soft grey tonal areas, evoking the artist’s signature language of lyrical abstraction. The tension between spontaneity and structure reflects Riopelle’s mature style, in which his energetic mark-making creates rhythmic visual fields.

Jean-Paul Riopelle was a leading figure of post-war abstraction in both Canada and France. A member of the Automatistes and a close associate of André Breton and the Parisian avant-garde, Riopelle developed a distinctive mosaic-like technique characterized by thick impasto and vibrant chromatic arrangements. His lithographs extend the language of his paintings into a more graphic realm, preserving the spontaneity and gesture that define his visual identity.
