4551 François Valentijn (1666–1727) – Exotic Fishes from the East Indies – Copperplate Engraving – 1724

This antique copperplate engraving features a vivid array of exotic fish species native to the East Indies, likely encountered in the waters surrounding Ambon, Banda, and other Moluccan islands. The scene is divided into two registers: the upper composition shows various reef and deep-sea fish arranged along a riverbank, while the lower panel displays striped, armored, and finned species placed in a stylized coastal setting. Each fish is annotated with a reference number for cataloguing purposes. This plate originates from Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (1724–1726), the encyclopedic account of Southeast Asia by François Valentijn.
François Valentijn (1666–1727), a Dutch missionary, scholar, and official of the VOC (Dutch East India Company), compiled extensive data on flora, fauna, and ethnography of the East Indies during his time in the region. His work offers a unique early European perspective on biodiversity in Indonesia, with illustrations that blend scientific curiosity and decorative Baroque composition.
