This antique copperplate engraving features exotic birds of paradise (Paradisaeidae) observed in the tropical forests of Ambon and the Moluccas (present-day Indonesia). Depicted in a lush landscape setting, two specimens are labeled below: C. Het Konings Vogeltje (The Little King Bird) and D. De Amboinsche Lange-bek (The Ambon Long-beak), presented with stylized elegance, one perched and the other in standing profile. The rich background with trees and mountains enhances the sense of natural grandeur. This engraving originates from François Valentijn’s monumental Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën (1724–1726), documenting the geography, fauna, and ethnography of the Dutch East Indies.

François Valentijn (1666–1727) was a Dutch Calvinist minister, naturalist, and VOC (Dutch East India Company) official. He is best known for his comprehensive work on the East Indies, which combined first-hand observations with reports from other VOC officials and missionaries. Valentijn’s illustrations, though often idealized, provide valuable insight into early European perceptions of Southeast Asia's natural world.
