4546 Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799) – Muraena Conger – Hand-Coloured Engraving – 1785

This hand-coloured engraving titled Muraena Conger (Sea Conger) presents a detailed scientific illustration of a conger eel with finely delineated scales, dorsal fin, and open mouth. The image captures the elongated anatomy and serpentine motion of the fish with remarkable precision, set against a minimal background typical of Bloch’s style. This plate was published as part of Bloch’s monumental ichthyological series Allgemeine Naturgeschichte der Fische (General Natural History of Fishes), considered one of the most important 18th-century works on marine biology.
Marcus Elieser Bloch (1723–1799) was a German physician and naturalist who made significant contributions to ichthyology. His 12-volume compendium on fishes featured over 400 illustrations, many of which were hand-coloured and based on first-hand specimens from European and international waters. His work remains a landmark in scientific illustration, merging taxonomy, aesthetics, and empirical observation.
