14 Christoph Weigel (1654–1725) – Map of Upper Austria / Austria Superior – Hand-Coloured Copperplate Engraving – Early 18th Century

This antique map titled Austria Superior depicts the territory of Upper Austria (Austriae Superioris Ducatus) with its surrounding regions. The map details rivers, towns, mountain ranges, and internal divisions with impressive topographic density. Political boundaries are highlighted in hand-applied yellow and red. A decorative title cartouche appears in the upper left corner, accompanied by another at the bottom left with allegorical figures and scale of distance (Scala milliarium Germanicorum).
Christoph Weigel (1654–1725), a renowned engraver and publisher from Nuremberg, produced some of the most refined early 18th-century maps of Central Europe. His engravings combine accuracy with Baroque visual design, reflecting the Enlightenment-era drive for geographic knowledge and political organization. This map exemplifies his clear cartographic layout and vibrant original colouring.
