4534 Ephraim Chambers & Abraham Rees – Pneumatics Instruments – Copperplate Engraving – 1786

This detailed copperplate engraving titled Pneumatics presents a range of scientific instruments related to the study of air pressure and gases, including various types of barometers (vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and wheel), an air pump, eudiometer, anemometer, and a freezing apparatus. Each figure is labeled with a number and corresponding lettered parts, arranged to demonstrate their structural differences and experimental functions. The plate was published in Volume 5 (Plates) of the expanded Cyclopaedia project by Chambers and Rees in 1786.
Ephraim Chambers (c.1680–1740) was an English encyclopaedist and the original author of Cyclopaedia, or an Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences (1728), one of the foundational works of Enlightenment knowledge organization. Abraham Rees (1743–1825), a Welsh theologian and scholar, later edited and expanded Chambers’ work into a monumental multi-volume encyclopedia. Rees’s edition integrated advanced scientific illustrations, bringing visual clarity to complex mechanical and experimental devices of the time.
