68 Hartmann Schedel (1440–1514) – View of Bamberg and Mons Honagorum – Woodcut from the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493)
This striking woodcut shows a double cityscape of Bamberg (BAMBERGA) and the fictional Mons Honagorum, printed on folio CLXXV of Hartmann Schedel’s famous Liber Chronicarum, known as the Nuremberg Chronicle. The richly illustrated city view features churches, bridges, towers, and defensive walls rendered in late Gothic style. Set within a Latin text block and printed on both recto and verso, the sheet offers a visually engaging combination of historical narrative and architectural imagery. The work is part of one of the most important incunabula of the 15th century and was published by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg in 1493.
Hartmann Schedel was a German historian, physician, and humanist. He is best known for compiling the Nuremberg Chronicle, one of the most extensively illustrated books of the 15th century. Schedel used woodcuts by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff to accompany his historical and geographical commentary. His work remains one of the landmarks of early printing and Renaissance humanist scholarship.
