85 Jean-Marc Nattier (1685–1766) & Laurent Cars (1699–1771) – Titon et l’Aurore – Engraving (1747)

This elaborate 18th-century engraving titled Titon et l’Aurore (Tithonus and Aurora) depicts the mythological love between the mortal Tithonus and the goddess of dawn. Aurora, surrounded by cherubs, floats amidst billowing clouds as she reaches out to her youthful lover. The composition is richly theatrical, with fluid drapery, expressive gestures, and symbolic elements like flowers and sunlight. Originally painted by Jean-Marc Nattier and engraved by Laurent Cars, this work was commissioned for the French royal collections and presented to the Marquis de Marigny. It exemplifies the grandeur of Rococo allegorical imagery and the technical finesse of French academic engraving.
Jean-Marc Nattier was a prominent French painter known for his mythological portraits of court ladies in allegorical guise, blending classical themes with contemporary elegance. Laurent Cars, one of the leading engravers of the 18th century, was renowned for his reproductive engravings after major painters. His work helped disseminate the imagery of the French royal court and promoted Rococo aesthetics across Europe.
