This original 18th-century engraving presents a map and coastal elevation views of Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific Ocean. The chart, based on observations from the second voyage of James Cook, includes a topographical map of the island’s interior and surrounding reefs, accompanied by four distinct coastal profiles recorded from different distances and bearings. The map notes the coordinates of the island at 25° S latitude and 130°30′ W longitude. The engraving was published as part of a French maritime atlas documenting the discoveries of European expeditions in Oceania during the Age of Enlightenment.

Jacques Renaud Benard  was a French engraver known for his precise and elegant cartographic engravings. He worked closely with naval hydrographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin and contributed to major French travel accounts and atlases of the 18th century. His plates were instrumental in visually recording the findings of explorers like Bougainville and Cook.
