36 Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) – Coastal Views and Map of New Ireland (Nova Hibernia), Bismarck Archipelago – Engraving (c.1760s)

This antique print features a detailed map and coastal profiles of New Ireland (Nova Hibernia) and adjacent islands in the Bismarck Archipelago, just north of New Britain. Once thought to be connected to New Guinea, New Ireland was confirmed as a separate island in 1767 by British navigator Philip Carteret, who sailed through the St. George’s Channel and named the island. The lower section displays a nautical chart of New Ireland’s southern coastline, while the upper half presents elevation views of key capes and islands, including Cap Orford, Cap St. George, Isle St. Jean, Isle of Man, and Lord Sandwich’s Isle. The print was likely produced for a French maritime atlas documenting Pacific exploration.
Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) was a prominent French cartographer and engineer of the Marine. Appointed hydrographer to the French Navy and a member of the Royal Society of London, he contributed hundreds of finely engraved maps to major French travel accounts, including those of Bougainville, La Pérouse, and the Histoire générale des voyages.
