This original engraving depicts a siege and military action during the early 17th century under the leadership of Prince Maurits of Nassau, as part of the campaigns against the Spanish during the Eighty Years’ War. The scene shows a fortified city under attack, complete with cannon, field encampments, and troop formations, surrounded by rivers and mountainous terrain. The engraving comes from Les guerres de Nassau, published in Amsterdam in 1616, and documents the military and political exploits of the House of Nassau. The visual style is closely linked to works by Frans Hogenberg and J.J. Orlers, with additional new scenes produced specifically for this edition.

Willem Baudartius (1565–1640) was a Flemish-born theologian, writer, and translator. Forced into exile during the religious conflicts of the 16th century, he eventually settled in the Northern Netherlands and became a prominent figure in the Dutch Reformed Church. He contributed to the Statenvertaling (official Dutch Bible translation) and was a key chronicler of the Dutch struggle for independence. The engravings in his work were created by several artists, including Simon Wynhoutsz. Frisius (1580–1629), a renowned Dutch engraver of historical and military scenes.
