124 Jacques de Sève (active 1742–1788) – Le Lièvre (The Hare) – Copperplate Engraving by Robert Bénard from Histoire Naturelle by Buffon (Late 18th Century)

This finely executed copperplate engraving titled Le Lièvre (The Hare) is from Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière. The hare is shown mid-stride, poised with natural alertness and anatomical precision against a rural landscape. The engraving is labeled Tome VI, Pl. XXXVIII and was drawn by Jacques de Sève and engraved by Robert Bénard, two of Buffon’s principal collaborators. The dynamic posture and detailed fur texture reflect the Enlightenment-era commitment to realism and scientific accuracy in natural illustration.
Buffon’s natural history volumes represented a groundbreaking synthesis of biology, art, and philosophy, and they remained a cornerstone of zoological literature throughout the 18th century.
