This copperplate engraving titled Le Cochon d’Inde (The Guinea Pig) appears in Tome VIII, Pl. I of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière. The animal is shown in profile, positioned on a stone ledge in front of a classically inspired fountain and architectural ruins—an imaginative backdrop typical of the picturesque aesthetic favored in Buffon’s volumes. The illustration was drawn by Jacques de Sève and engraved by Charles Baquoy, whose collaboration produced some of the most elegant zoological images of the Enlightenment period.

Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle was a foundational scientific publication of the 18th century, blending careful empirical observation with graceful visual presentation, and greatly influencing the development of modern zoology.
