This detailed copperplate engraving titled Le Dromadaire (The Dromedary) is from Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon’s celebrated Histoire Naturelle, Générale et Particulière. The dromedary is depicted in profile with finely rendered textures and anatomical accuracy, set against a desert landscape featuring the pyramids of Egypt. The image reflects the scientific and artistic ambitions of the Enlightenment, combining zoological observation with a sense of geographic context. The illustration was drawn by Jacques de Sève and engraved by Charles Baquoy, both of whom were instrumental in visualizing Buffon’s comprehensive natural history volumes.

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788), was a central figure of Enlightenment science, whose multi-volume Histoire Naturelle sought to systematically catalog the natural world. His work laid the groundwork for later studies in biology, zoology, and paleontology.
