This elegant full-length portrait engraving depicts Jeanne d’Autriche (Joanna of Austria), Grand Duchess of Tuscany and daughter of Emperor Ferdinand I. She is portrayed in regal attire with elaborate embroidery and jeweled accessories, standing before a voluminous curtain. The caption notes that she was the mother of Queen Marie de’ Medici, born in Prague in 1547, married Francesco I de’ Medici in 1565, and died at the young age of 32 in 1578. The original painting was by Peter Paul Rubens, and the engraving was executed by Gérard Edelinck, one of the foremost portrait engravers of his era. This plate was also published by Nattier in Paris with the privilege of the Royal Academy.

Gérard Edelinck (1640–1707) was a celebrated Flemish-French engraver recognized for his refined and expressive portraiture. A member of the Académie Royale and engraver to the king, he contributed significantly to the visual culture of the French Baroque through his interpretations of paintings by the great masters.
