104 Gérard Edelinck (1640–1707) after Peter Paul Rubens – Portrait of Francesco I de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany – Engraving (Late 17th Century)

This stately full-length portrait engraving depicts Francesco I de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, father of Queen Marie de' Medici. He is shown standing in an interior setting, draped in a fur-lined cloak and wearing the insignia of the Order of Saint Stephen. The Latin and French caption notes that Francesco died in 1587 without legitimate male heirs and was succeeded by his brother Ferdinand I, who resigned the cardinalate to ascend to the ducal throne. The original painting was by Peter Paul Rubens, and this engraving was executed by Gérard Edelinck, one of the most renowned portrait engravers of the French Baroque, assisted by B. Audran. The print was published in Paris by Nattier, engraver to the Académie Royale.
Gérard Edelinck (1640–1707) was a Flemish-born engraver who worked in France and gained acclaim for his masterful portraits of royalty, nobility, and prominent figures. He was appointed graveur du roi (engraver to the king) and became a member of the Académie Royale. His engravings are distinguished by their precision, refined lines, and ability to capture the psychological depth of his subjects.
